Not Letting Pain Get in Between Your Dreams
Not Letting Pain Get in Between Your Dreams Photo by carlos.a.martinez via Flickr.com The way pain can hinder someone is twofold. Emotional pain can stop someone to progress depending on how much it hits them. Some are more tolerable of pain whereas others are more deeply affected by words that get thrown their way. People adjust the way they speak to different people based of experience and what the relationship is like. You wonât be talking to your sensitive friend the same way you would to your best friend. If as a sensitive person someone tells you that your idea is undoable, that may be alone to cause the pain that will make you abandon that idea completely. Someone that tolerates his or her emotions more will not be intimidated by such a comment. They will still go through with their ideas and take more risk that will either be beneficial or disadvantageous; regardless, the benefits will not occur if no chances are taken. Physical pain can stop people from reaching their dreams in ways that some may not have though of before. For example, if there is a certain appearance required to obtain a particular career, some will not take the extra mile to get that look. Beauty is pain and for some women, that pain is not worth it. Getting your hair done, waxing, and staying in shape does not come easy and it weeds the strong from the weak. Men do not have to worry about that so much but they have to put up with more than women do. Men get assigned the most strenuous tasks that would otherwise not be assigned to women. There is still a great double standard between men and women in order to get to the next level. Can a cold stop you from accomplishing your daily tasks? How does being tired affect your performance in the things that matter the most? Can physical pain stop you from going to the next level? This is where your determination and ambition may be tested. Pain is all in the mind. Those who have taken it to the next level have learned how to ignore it at times or just tolerate it when it came in the way. Some people await extenuating circumstances to use as an excuse to stay away from success. Itâs true that some are frightened by success. I believe that, as unfortunate as it sounds, there isnât room for everyone to be successful. Everyone says they want to be on top, but talk is cheap. Itâs easy to influence people with your words but itâs the people that do the less talking that work towards getting to the next level. Chase your dreams. Everyone has a calling but it takes some longer to figure it out. When you do figure out what it is, do not let pain get in the way of it. You donât need a team to believe in you; believe in yourself!
The Straight Christian Males View on the DOMA Decision
The Straight Christian Males View on the DOMA Decision Those faces (From aceshowbiz.com) I know this is a bit slow to the party, we all know what happened and have reacted properly. I want to think through my feelings on this first though and really form something thoughtful and thorough for you guys. I wont bombard you with statistics about how bad or good homosexual couples are. And even though, as the titlestates, I am Christian I wont throw tons and tons of verses at you. But if not then why bother? you ask. Because you can google some statistic for yourself and easily find things that contradict what I present because of people using psuedo-science. (Hooray for that by the wayseriously, way to use the main way to find truths to provide you lies, really great job. Im slow clapping for you) And I wont throw scripture at you because since when the hell is this a religious debate? Since stupid, thats when. Once stupidity enters any conversation that conversation is essentially dead. Theres also the debate that its unnatural and just wrong and therefore they shouldnt be allowed to marry because ew thats not natural. Shut up, neither is plastic. Now then, weve written a few articles about this topic but the death of DOMA is significant. So, then now that we have some foundation laid lets begin.Going back to my last point about this not being a religious debate seems strange, right? Homosexuals destroy the sanctity of marriage! you cry out. OK, but the 2-week Hooray for lack of progress (From yoism.org) Hollywood marriages dont? Lets face it, whatever sanctity of marriage was left after Henry VIII started beheading women who couldnt give him a son(no seriously that happened, if you dont know check it out. Happened in like 1982I think anyways) has long since been destroyed. Im sorry, Id love to get married eventually and have a nice ceremony but that wouldnt make it anymore sanctified than any other marriage gay or otherwise. Now some people say a marriage is sanctified by God and since being gay is a sin they cant have that. So HA! Take that, gays! Wrongback track a bit here. Lets cover the two things wrong here: 1) if you believe in God as well then congratulations youre also a sinner so there goes sinners cant get married 2) Atheists and people of other religions get married, do theirs just get discredited on a technicality? Im not trying to write off any higher power here, just trying to point out your inconsistency. For the religious folks who say religion is defined as being between a man and a woman check again. Its a SOCIAL contract, meaning religion is not a prerequisite. My main push has been to just let them do it because how does it affect you? Whether you call it marriage, a legal union, whatever, why are we denying people basic rights to their loved ones? If we want to get legal about it and say that America is a Christian nation, blah blah blah. No it isnt, it was invented out of the idea s of freedom from persecution. Read the constitution, God shows up around 0 times, if you round up. Thats not to say none of the values are there and our forefathers were godless heathens, but its not what they wanted America for. America was made for, as Braveheart would say, FREEDOM. Now then, onto the science of being gay now that legalities are over with. I got some fresh krill at my place (From funmag.org) Aww look at the cute little penguins.who could possibly be gay. Just saying. Being gay isnt unnatural because it kind of happens in nature about all the time. Various creatures do it and actually do it without bullying the homosexual ones either. So good job again humans, youre bigger a-holes than dolphins and those guys suck. Now,I cant say with 100% certainty that it is something your born as or not but from everyone Ive asked it was. Ive heard stories that some people chose to be and then chose not to be anymore. So it obviously differs and that brings up the whole Nature vs. Nurture concept. Which if you dont know what it is, in short its basically a debate as to whether behavior arises because it is simply hardwired into us (nature) or as a direct result of upbringing (nurture). Personally, I think it isnt much of a choice. Just from what Ive gathered from talking with people about this, its hard to accept that its a choice. And if you reading this think it is a choice then I ch allenge you right now to choose to be gay. Do itits just a choice. I cant choose that and cant even imagine doing it because thats not for me, but for others it is. Ill leave you with this thought to ponder then for a bit, if you are dead set on it has to be a choice then think about it in these terms: its not necessarily deciding whether or not they want to be gay, its deciding whether or not they want to lie about who they are for fear of persecution or to come out and accept whatever may come along with their happiness. So theres my views. Im happy DOMA finally died, but severely disheartened it took this long and isnt even legal in most states because we as humans suck. If you are part of the LGBTQ community I just want to apologize on behalf of fellow Christians who may have turned you away. I accept you with open arms as little as that really means. I dont want to get too preachy up on my soapbox, but please know we arent all like that. For some reason every dumb person has their voice heard by millions and unfortunately their hateful rhetoric is the minority. But again Im sorry for everything. Take that for what you will. Please if you want to discuss this more contact me, if you feel unsure of where you stand on this, on your sexuality, whatever it may be you can contact me. Id be a third-party neutral source. Anyways feel free to drop your opinion in the comments, Ill respond as I can.

Should My Child Transfer Schools
Should My Child Transfer Schools The following piece was written by Liz Perelstein. Liz has been featured in ourAdmissions Expert seriesand is the Founder of School Choice International. There are many reasons you may consider changing your childs school, but often, parents dont act on these instincts. Many parents are afraid to trade the devil they know for the one they dont know. Even though a child may be unhappy, struggling academically, or feeling under-challenged, parents typically are worried about their childs transition. If the child is not thriving, parents often think it could be worse in a different environment. If a child is thriving in certain respects for example, socially but not academically parents may be concerned about recreating a positive social life in a new school. While I generally view mid-course adjustments as a good thing, I never advocate changing schools before first trying to work with the teacher, the guidance counselor, and even the head of school to rectify the situation. And, if a child shows prolonged misery before going to school, frequently feigns illness, vomits, is unusually tearful, or has major appetite or sleep changes, things may be serious enough to consult a professional. A change of school is not necessarily the answer, and should not be made without addressing the other issues. In this post, I will address times that a change may be a good idea, and also seek to dispel some of the myths that prevent parents from acting. Why change your childs school: A child may attend a school that doesnt suit his or her learning style. Some children learn best in a structured environment where the teacher directs learning. Other children do their best by learning concepts through experience. If you find that your childs learning style is mismatched with the schools philosophy, you may be trying to fit a round peg into a square hole and a transfer may be worthwhile. Many schools are ill equipped to handle a child who is not mainstream not only academically, but on any dimension. Not every private school has resources to deal with children who have special educational needs. On the other side of the spectrum, profoundly gifted children may not receive the support they need to prosper when teachers focus on children who are not doing well. You may wish to consider a change of school based on your childs interests. Often, when parents choose the first school, they know little about their child. As his/her interests develop, the school s/he attends may not offer courses or extracurricular activities that will support his or her growth. Your child may not fit in socially. Every school, and each cohort within a school, has a personality. If your child isnt accepted or is bullied, these are issues, first, to be addressed with the school administration. However, sometimes s/he will fit in better in a different environment where s/he can find a more natural peer group. If a family moves to a new area, distance can be a good reason to change schools. Not only is the school far away, spending time with friends or participating in sports and cultural activities can be an effort. Finally, if a child requests to change schools, take this very seriously. Few children want to make a significant life change unless they really are out of step. When my daughter started high school and came home saying it isnt cool to be smart here, we honored her desire to change schools and she had a wonderful high school experience as a result. If an educational change makes sense for any of these reasons, dont be afraid to make the switch. Parents often think it is impossible to get a place in a school in a non-entry-level grade. This simply isnt true. People move from one city or country to another, families move from the city to the suburbs or vice versa, and chance vacancies occur. There may not be the same number of options as there are during an entry-level year, but the competition isnt as fierce either. Children are resilient. While we never like to see our children go through difficult times, flexibility and the ability to adapt to new environments are valuable skills to teach children and an important part of their education. Changing a childs school when things arent working teaches them problem-solving skills. After working with thousands of families in transition over the past 15 years, I am convinced that getting the right fit far outweighs the costs of the transition itself. A Day in the Life at University of Michigan
A Day in the Life at University of Michigan The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Samantha is a Philadelphia tutor specializing in a multitude of subjects such as Statistics tutoring, Physiology tutoring, and Italian tutoring. She studied Biopsychology and Music at University of Michigan where she graduated from in 2012. See what she had to say about her undergraduate experience: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Samantha: The campus at the University of Michigan is extremely diverse. Central Campus (the main part of campus) is relatively urban, with a variety of businesses, stores, and restaurants. North campus (the home of the music, theatre, engineering and art programs) is a more suburban/rural area with rolling hills, small lakes and a plethora of green space. Despite the occasional petty crime, campus is very well monitored and extremely safe. The campus is quite large, however, so while there is no need for a car, bikes and the university bus system are often necessary to travel the entirety of campus. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Samantha: The exceedingly large size of the university inherently limits the contact between faculty and students. Despite the often large class sizes, all professors hold office hours and are extremely approachable and are often thrilled to have interpersonal contact with students. Advisors and teaching assistants are not inundated with such large classes, so they are significantly more available than their professor counterparts. Generally, if a student needs help, wants guidance or merely wants to interact with faculty or staff, they are easily able to. However, if students are not proactive, they will likely not cultivate meaningful relationships with the professors. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Samantha: There are a variety of dorm layouts and locations at the University of Michigan. Most dorms are the traditional layout, but some are suite-style. There are dorms throughout central campus and one very large dorm on north campus. Each dorm is situated either directly next to or very near to a dining hall. Each dining hall has a variety of options that can accommodate all dietary restrictions. Michigan, throughout history, has been lauded for its masterful balance of emphasis on strong academics and on cultivating friendships through active socialization opportunities. The dorms are no different they contain quiet study rooms but also organize many social excursions and activities. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Samantha: The University of Michigans success and representation is quite evenly distributed across programs and majors. I graduated with a dual degree in Music (vocal performance) and Neuroscience. Both my areas of study were extremely comprehensive with numerous diverse elective selections to supplement the core curriculum. Additionally, I was thrilled with the instruction in both my majors. Both my professors and graduate student instructors/assistants were not only competent teachers, but also leaders in their field (be it musical performance or research). The university also supported both my areas of study financially. Merit and need-based aid were both readily accessible if earned and sought. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Samantha: I am very outgoing, so I immediately felt comfortable on campus and had many friends. The size of the university is certainly daunting to some, but it also means that the university is abundant in resources and in activities. I found that I could find people extremely easily who had similar interests, clubs that facilitated meeting those with similar interests, and activities aimed at cultivating new friendships. The University of Michigan is the kind of school where a student does not have to actively try to be involved it is expected and significantly easier than the alternative. I have yet to meet a Michigan graduate who did not love their experience social and otherwise. Post-graduation, I have made more of my friends through Michigan alumni networks than anywhere else the spirit for the university and the number of opportunities for involvement and change are so abundant, that it transcends the four years of schooling. Greek life has a presence on campus, but by no means is a necessity to have a thriving social life. I did not participate in Greek life, but I have many friends that did and both of our experiences were extremely rich and neither precludes one from taking advantage of all that Michigan has to offer. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Samantha: I cannot say enough about this. The Career Center played an integral role in my life throughout my junior and senior year. I decided to attend Drexel University for my PhD because of the Career Center and couldnt be happier with my choice. The reputation of the University of Michigan is outstanding, and the alumni network is unparalleled. As a result, most large corporations either actively recruit at Michigan or at least are represented at one of the many job fairs on campus. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Samantha: I am aware of at least 11 libraries on the campus of the University of Michigan. Additionally, there are many rooms at the Michigan League Student Union and all dormitories that offer productive study areas. They all certainly get busy around midterms and finals, but in my four years, I never had any problems finding a place to study. The study areas are also extremely diverse offering group areas, computer labs, meeting rooms, quiet rooms, private individual carrels, media rooms, etc. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Samantha: Ann Arbor is internationally acclaimed. It is a very artsy town and revolves entirely around the university. There are numerous fine dining restaurants and art galleries in addition to the traditional college-town establishments. Furthermore, there are theatres, music venues and many events occurring in the town of Ann Arbor. While the town is filled with possibilities for activities, there are also a great deal of activities occurring on campus. The Music, Theatre Dance school is top in the nation, so there are always concerts, musicals, operas and plays available to students (for free or cheap) around campus. There are also many non-formalized music and arts performances. Additionally, Michigan is famous for its sports! Football Saturdays are a fixture in Michigan tradition, and there are always basketball games, hockey games, and other sports around as well. If you dont want to watch them, you can always play them too. There are many club and intramural teams around cam pus, and if one that you want doesnt exist, you can make it. It all of my years living in Ann Arbor, I only traveled to Detroit a handful of times and almost always for organized events: date parties, Red Wings games, Lions games, Tigers games, the Detroit Jazz Festival, operas at the Detroit Opera House, Detroit Symphony concerts. Detroit has much to offer, but it is never necessary to leave Ann Arbor unless you want to! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Samantha: The student body is huge. It is entirely a personal preference but I was generally quite pleased with the class sizes. I often attended large lectures (upwards of 100-200 students), but they were all divided into small discussion sections that met once a week. As students work their way into the more specialized upper-level courses of their program, the classes generally get smaller and smaller and students have more contact with faculty. For me, it was a good transition from the lower level classes to the more specialized upper level classes but lectures are unavoidable in most programs. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Samantha: My senior year I decided to branch out and take a 400-level (highest undergraduate level) small seminar in political science a topic I had never taken a class in before. The title of the class was The History of Zionism and the Middle East Conflict. The content seemed interesting (despite my lack of previous exposure to any class of this nature) and the readings were extremely applicable to understanding current events. The class, unbeknownst to me at the time, consisted of 10 students and a discussion/debate format. Without a doubt, this class was the most challenging, most interesting and most rewarding class I have ever taken at the University of Michigan. My professor, Dr. Lieberman, taught us by example how to be informed consumers of politics and current events, how to effectively research, and how to self-initiate large-scale writing assignments. This class, although entirely unrelated to my area of study, was a signal to me that I was capable and ready to embark on a PhD program. Many other classes and professors made an extremely large mark on my intellectual endeavours and my personal ones if I had unlimited time and space, I could write a book about my positive experiences at the University of Michigan (and likely only a few small pages about the negative ones). If so, follow these tips for sitting GCSE as an adult!J K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, had to work hard to get to where she is now. Photo credit: lozikiki via VisualHuntBe Equipped To Stand Out From The CrowdIf you want the examin er to notice your individuality in an English Literature exam, you need to find ways to make your work stand out from others in a smart and positive way.For instance, taking an unusual approach to a text analysis can impress an examiner, even if they (or even you) do not fully agree with that side of the argument. The key, however, is to commit to your response and to be convincing and eloquent in the way you present it.When the examiner comes to the end of your text, you can bank on he or she wondering why or how they have never heard that argument before. Of course, this will only work if your ideas are plausible. But how can you achieve this and where can you find the information and tools required to do so? Hopefully, by now, you have come to realise that all the answers are not solely found in the books set on your syllabus. To be close to being able to formulate an intelligent and thought-provoking response to an essay question, you must have some background knowledge of your t ext and be able to apply an awareness of context, whether that be social or historical, to the areas which you are focusing on. For instance, how better to learn about the times in which characters were living in than by looking in detail at that period in history?Equally, you cannot expect to understand the meaning of a given text unless you know about the person writing it.
